The United Church in Garland, Manitoba. It was built in 1916 and originally named Saint John’s Ruthenian Presbyterian Church.
The Presbyterian Church of Canada assumed the role of converting Ukrainian pioneers to the Presbyterian faith. I think the fact that so many Ukrainian Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox Churches far outnumber United churches tells the story.
In 1925 the Presbyterian Church joined the new United Church of Canada.

Not all the Presbyterians joined the United Church, especially those in Ontario. The 30% who did not join became known as "Continuing Presbyterians." Remember Don Harron's comic character "Charlie Farquharson"? He was a Continuing Presbyterian.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever met a "Continuing Presbyterian."
DeleteLove the setting.
ReplyDeleteI really wanted to get a closer look at the church but the grass around the church was waist deep and I didn't feel comfortable traipsing through the unknown (and didn't want to fall into an uncovered well or anything like that).
DeleteBeautiful, lonely...evocative...takes my imagination by the hand.....
ReplyDeleteThanks David. It was a beautiful sight...dreamy, and sparked my imagination.
DeleteLooks comfortably nestled among the fall trees. The cross is rather understated.
ReplyDeleteIt is rather a small cross now that you mention it. Bigger isn't always better (or something like that).
