An unfinished and abandoned church near Fosston, Saskatchewan.
This is Transfiguration of Jesus Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
The dome and cupolas were obviously designed and built by someone who loved their work.
The cemetery is small with only a few trees along the fence line.
An ornate Orthodox cross standing near the cemetery.
The view to the north...
...and the view from the balcony.
My first visit was this past winter. Some photos from that trip here: Transfiguration
Photographed on July 29, 2021.
There was a sister church of almost identical construct built in Clair at about the same time frame. It was never completed and taken down years ago.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dale.
DeleteGreat shots. I need to make a return trip sometime.
ReplyDeleteThanks BW. This is one that I could revisit several more times. It has that "je ne c'est quoi" that is quite rare.
DeleteInteresting that it was never finished. One of those things one wonders the 'why' of. Did they run out of money perhaps?
ReplyDeleteWhile the church was being built there was fighting within the congregation which then split in two distinct groups. Some stayed with Transfiguration while the others built another church. Most likely there wasn't enough money to go around so neither church was ever completed.
