He looks awfully big to be a ground squirrel. Could he be a prairie dog instead?
The same thought occurred to me at first but prairie dogs have a distinctive black tip on their tails. This one has the typical ground squirrel black hairs all along the upper side of the tail. Well, that's my theory anyway. :-)
He looks chubby enough so obviously has found a good source of food over the winter.
I'm sure he has a good stash for winter.
