Road Trip Day Three - Wheatwyn

Wheatwyn Lutheran Church is located near Markinch, Saskatchewan and was built of local fieldstone over the years 1906-1907.

I tried to see it last winter but the trail leading to the church was buried in about a foot of snow.

An unusual feature of the church is the balcony which runs along both the back wall and north side of the building.  The staircase is narrow and steep.

Up here the seating consists of very simple bench seats.

As seen in this photo, one side of the nave is wooden chairs while the other side offers pews.

A large black metal cross stands tall at the entrance to the cemetery.

A view of the church through the cemetery gate.

Photographed on July 26, 2021.

  1. The balcony is, no doubt, the choir loft. We have a church here that is still in use and has the balcony and it's used for the choir so I have to assume that's the purpose of it. Nice church!
