Little Guy

The chinook wind is blessing us with warm weather here in southern Alberta.  If it gets much warmer these little guys are going to wake up from their winter's sleep and think it's spring.

Saint John's in Nipawin

Saint John's Anglican Church in Nipawin, Saskatchewan.

The Anglican ministry in the region dates back to the mid-1800's.  The parish of Nipawin was established in 1924 with an early church built in 1924-1925.  The current church as shown here was built in 1948-49.

New Stockholm

New Stockholm Lutheran Church was established in 1889 and is the first Swedish Augustana Lutheran Church in all of Canada.  The current church began construction in 1919, opened in 1921 and is home to these beautiful stained glass windows.  Enjoy!

Above is the panel over the front doors.

These four tall, narrow panels are repeated throughout the church.

Each transept houses an oversize arched panel of stained glass.  "Jesus with sheep" on the north and "Jesus knocking at the door" on the south.   

The view from the altar reveals the scale of the windows....the large panels are over twenty feet tall.

These windows are all original to the church.

This is one of the finest sets of original antique stained glass windows I have encountered anywhere in my travels.

Smoky Butte Township School

A one room school near Stady, North Dakota.

The flagpole is still straight and the building looks as sturdy as the day it was built.

The two doors suggest separate boy's and girl's entrances.

An unusual feature of the school is that the brick chimney has been stuccoed.

Folk Art

A grave marker at the first cemetery of Saint Julien Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Mary the Protectress.

For me this was a remarkable and outstanding find.  It's rare to see such a lovingly handcrafted memorial for a dear one that has passed.

"Щасливого Різдва!"

"Merry Christmas!" to those who follow the Julian calendar.   

This is Holy Trinity Orthodox Church at Kahwin, Alberta.

The congregation was established in 1931 at which time the first church was built.  After being destroyed by fire a new church, the one shown here, began construction in 1934.

The free standing bell tower is designed to house three bells (although only two bells are installed here).

A memorial table dedicated to the pioneers of the area.

The attractive bronze-coloured dome and cupolas are topped with black wrought iron crosses.  

The cemetery was established in the early 1900's by Presbyterians and continues to be used to this day.  On this occasion a few of the headstones in the cemetery were decorated for the holiday season.

Even if you don't follow the Julian calendar, another holiday is always welcome.

The aging grain elevator in Peterson, Saskatchewan.

If you look closely you'll see a three-quarters moon overhead.

At one time it was operated by J & L Farms but now looks abandoned.
