Parohia Ortodoxă Română Nașterea Fecioarei Maria

A walk through the grounds of the Romanian Orthodox Parish of the Birth of the Virgin Mary.  Enjoy!

The church is in the southwest corner of the grounds.

A peek inside.

The bell tower is tucked far into the bushes...

...and the bell is still mounted inside.

My Sunday afternoon visit to Saint Mary's was most enjoyable.  The grounds are surrounded on all four sides by a dense hedge of trees and bushes and,  once inside the lush greenery, it's a world unto its own.

Photographed near Hairy Hill, Alberta on September 19, 2021.

    1. Thanks BW. The interior photos were taken from outside through the windows.

  2. Those are great shots of the interior. When I try this I usually just get reflections. I wonder what will happen to this church.

    1. Taking photos through windows can be tricky.

I had the good fortune to meet Father Panciuk at Saint Mary's of Boian (the big church on the hill to the north) that day. He said the last service conducted at the little gray church was about five years ago and since then the building has been deemed unsafe. There is a plan to empty the church of icons, pews, etcetera and then be dismantled. Personally, I'd like to see it standing for a few more years. Plans don't always go according to plan.

  3. I always appreciate stained glass, ornate or plain. Looks like a lovely little church and sad that it's on the list to be dismantled.

    1. I was both surprised and pleased to see the arch of coloured glass above each window. It must have been quite an expense for a small congregation back in the early 1910's.

Maybe the plan to dismantle the little gray church will be put on the back burner, so to speak...at least for the time being. Here's hoping.
