On the Road Day Five - Shewchenko

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Saint Michael the Archangel dates back to the 1920's.  The first service was held on December 4, 1925.

The simple and attractive wrought iron Orthodox cross adorning the cupola.

The cemetery was established in 1916 and named Shevchenko Cemetery.

Many of the early burials were children, victims of the flu epidemic of 1918.

The church was also known as North Kotzman Ukrainian Greek Church in the early days.

Shewchenko is also spelled Shevchenko.

  1. Nice to see that the cemetery has been tended to and a sign put up. When I was there in 2014 the the cemetery had been neglected for a long time.

    1. The cemetery was incorporated just ten months ago. Someone or possibly a group of people must have decided to take the property under their wing, so to speak.

I saw it for the first time this past winter. The sign was brand new.

  2. Sad to know that many of the first burials were children. Doing family research, I've come across entire families of children that were wiped out during that flu.

    1. It' an unsettling but familiar sight in most pioneer cemeteries.
