Святий Михайло в Пено

Saint Michael at Peno.

The church began construction in 1909.

A concrete and stone bell tower is tucked into the southwest corner of the grounds.

The cemetery was established in 1904 and is less than half a mile south of the church.

Saint Michael the Archangel Russo Orthodox Church and Cemetery is in Lamont County, Alberta.

Photographed on January 6, 2019.

  1. First thing that caught my eye was the red at the base of the bell tower - wondered why. Hard to tell by the picture if it was originally red or if it had been painted.

    1. The base of the bell tower is made of cast concrete as are most of the older budded-cross shaped headstones in the cemetery. Cast concrete needs to be protected from the elements by a new coat of paint every so often otherwise it will crumble. Just guessing but maybe the red colour was picked in order to simulate red brick?

    2. Or maybe there simply was a sale on red paint - or it was just what the person had on hand to use up.
