Rosedale United Church and Cemetery

I love catching these country churches in late afternoon winter light...they simply glow against the sky and snow.

Tapered to a Cross

February 22, 2020
While doing some research the other night on Eastern European churches in Canada I came across an evocative phrase..."tapered to a cross."  Images of the crosses that top the onion domes of Ukrainian churches instantly came to mind.

Some simple, some fancy and a few in between.  Enjoy!

Nice Day

It was +14°C in Medicine Hat today and "felt" like spring.  I borrowed Daisy for the afternoon and took her to the park for a walk.

To celebrate this glorious day here are some summer shots of the pond in Strathcona Island Park in Medicine Hat, Alberta.  Of course it's still brown here but the colour will return in no time!

Sacred Heart Cemetery near Altario

Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Cemetery is on the outskirts of Altario, Alberta.

The cemetery is enclosed by a white-painted steel pipe fence.  There are several mature evergreen trees on the cemetery grounds as well as this tall handcrafted wooden cross.

Late fall colours come to life under the trees.

The breadth of this spruce tree has almost engulfed these wooden-cross grave markers.

Nice spot for a sit-down.

Shishkovtzy

The Shishkovtzy gate sign at Saint Mary's Holy Dormition Russo-Greek Orthodox Church and Cemetery near Shandro, Alberta in Lamont County.

The Ukrainian settlers began arriving to the area from Shishkovtzy, Bukovina in 1898.  The first church was constructed of hand hewn logs in 1905 and was later replaced in 1963 by the church in these photos.

The wrought iron crosses atop the central dome and front cupola.

The church is still used for special services.  There is a parish priest who also serves at several neighbouring churches.

The Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos is annually celebrated here on August 28 according to the Julian calendar.

The church, cemetery and grounds are immaculately maintained.

...and the memorial cairn were raised for the centennial anniversary in 2004.

The three original bells donated to the first church are still used at the new church.  These are cast brass bells from "the old country" and sound wonderful.

The main sign for the church...

...and with the church in the background.

This is just one of many historical churches in Lamont County.
