Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker

Black and white all around.

A monument marking the site of the first church.  The congregation was organized in 1900 and officially established 1909.

Several headstones had recently received a fresh coat of paint.

Many of the children's graves are situated by the aspen trees along the outer edge of the cemetery.

The white headstones are brilliant against the autumn leaves.

A long shot of the grounds.

The addition to the back of the bell tower is a community hall (where I'll bet the highlight of most get-togethers was a meal of perogies and sausages).

Alexander Plain S.D. No. 1029

Heavy frost on the Alexander Plain School sign.

It was even colder than the photos suggest.

Twenty-one months earlier to the day it looked like this.

Alexander Plain School was a few miles east of Burstall, Saskatchewan.

Photographed on November 22, 2020 (Photos #1 and #2) and February 22, 2019 (Photo #3).

Fairy Tale House

Saw this simply by chance during my last road trip...a recently built but unfinished and abandoned stone house.

A look inside.

And a look up...

...where all the ducks are in a row.

The roof was meant to be finished with thatch.

The garage.

The "picture window" on the beveled corner of the house.

Fairy Tale House is in Togo, Saskatchewan.

Wartime Water Tower

Not many of these still standing.  Enjoy!

Originally built in 1914 to supply water to steam locomotives.

And still in use today but now supplies domestic water to people in the surrounding area.

Червона церква влітку

Red church in summer.

The view from the front corner of the cemetery...

...which has a number of occupants.

The free-standing cross at the head of the cemetery.

A trio of headstones beside the bell tower.

The green asphalt shingles are in high contrast with the red bricks.

The cornerstone of the church.

One last look at the beautiful red church on my way back to the road.

Saint John Ukrainian Catholic Church is near Rushville, Saskatchewan.

Червона церква взимку

Red church in winter.

The octagonal dome stands tall above the church.

Leafless trees...

...and a swirl of clouds in a blue sky over the cemetery.

It's unusual so see the cupolas and dome covered with asphalt shingles.

Light passing through the church bring this pair of gold-coloured windows to life.

I'm sure there are times when the blue-painted lanterns below the cupolas are indistinguishable from the colour of the sky.

A view of the church and bell tower from the road.

Officially named Saint John Apostle the Theologian (or Saint John Bohoslow Krasne Ukrainian Catholic Church), depending on which historical records are consulted.  It is known to the locals as Krasne Church.

Photographed near Rushville, Saskatchewan on November 28, 2020.

Reflections

The north-side windows reflected in the windows on the south side...

...each with a view of the cemetery.
