Tommy the Turtle greets visitors to the border town of Boissevain, Manitoba.
He gets his name from the Turtle Mountains that span the Manitoba/North Dakota border just south of town. The "mountains" are much like the Appalachians: expansive, forested, rolling hills. Quite beautiful.
Say "Hi!" to Tommy when you're in town.

I was in high school in the 70s when Tommy was built -- one of those "world's biggest" monuments so popular on the prairies then for "bringing in the tourists." Boissevain used to have a big annual turtle race that was very popular too. I went to Boissevain a few times in order to visit the Peace Gardens located in Manitoba/North Dakota.
ReplyDeleteTommy still looks good as new.
