Folly

A stone folly beside a farmer's driveway.  There really is no practical purpose for a folly except as a decoration...and what a handsome decoration it is.

I'll bet every kid in the county would like one beside their driveway.

Photographed somewhere between Oyen and Acadia Valley, Alberta on December 12, 2021.

  1. I have seen this a few times and think it is great. Too bad there is not a matching one on the other side of the road.

  2. I half-expect the French Knight from Monty Python to pop up from the top of the turret and taunt me!

  3. Interesting to note the name of it - makes one wonder at the true origin of the word 'folly'. Waiting for a school bus in one of these could lead to all sorts of imagination!

    1. Folly is one of those words that gets a bad rap or is simply misunderstood. "Folly" used as a noun, as it is here, is simply a light hearted, yet often extravagant, structure that is just "for the fun of it."

    2. Thanks for the definition Michael. I had planned to 'do a google' when I was done commenting and then completely forgot.
