Saint Ascension

An icon of the past in the lush landscape of central-eastern Saskatchewan.

A long abandoned church that, in my opinion, is second to none.

This is Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church...known to the locals simply as "Saint Ascension."

On the northward slope...

...sits the cemetery.

Photographed near Old Maryville, Saskatchewan on August 7, 2020.

  1. I understand that this church was never completely finished but it must have been used given the cemetery.

    1. Sorry, I was thinking of a similar abandoned church north of Quill Lake SK that was not completed.

    2. This one is a "must see!" There's another church less than a mile to the south and yet another about a half mile northwards. All of them have a cemetery on the grounds.

  2. As you know my first reaction is to organize a work bee of locals and buy the paint and scaffolding... the first photo drew me to the isolation, the loneliness, the sadness of the church being like lost child in the wilderness...yes it beckons me at multi levels...thank you

    1. Thank you David. Saint Ascension is one of those special places...and I'm sure you know what I mean.
